Alpine Township

Cascade Township

UPDATE: (August 13)

Beginning  August 14, Rieth-Riley will resume work on Cascade Township neighborhood streets north of 36th Street. Work will be conducted on various local streets and will include raising castings, applying top course, milling and base course paving.

Residents are reminded to abide by the no parking yard signs, where posted. Thank you for your patience and cooperation!

 

UPDATE: (August 1) KCRC is taking the necessary steps to minimize the impact of the strike by Operating Engineers Local 324 against Rieth-Riley Construction, a KCRC contractor, that began today, July 31. For Cascade Township Neighborhood Streets north of 36th Street:

  • KCRC will be making spot repairs where needed throughout the subdivisions where asphalt has been removed so that residents and motorists can more conveniently navigate along these areas.
  • Once the labor dispute is resolved, KCRC will work with Rieth-Riley to reschedule the remaining work.

100th Street

Schedule Date: May 20 - August 9, 2019

Location Detail: East of Eastern Ave. to Kalamazoo Ave.

Reconstruct to 2-lane all season road standard.  Work includes tree removal, earthwork, valley gutter, ditches, culvert replacement, HMA pavement, pavement markings and restoration.  Through traffic will be detoured.  

100th Street Bridge over Thornapple River

Schedule Date: June 11 - August 23, 2019

Location Detail: East of River Short Drive

UPDATE: July 11th - August 16, bridge closed
The 100th Street Bridge will close while deck work, including expansion joint replacement and stone placement, is completed. (A temporary signal had initially been installed on the bridge during repair of its substructure.)  During this closure, all traffic will be detoured.

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted C.A. Hull Co., Inc for the following:
1. Repair Bridge Substructure
2. Replace Bridge Expansion Joints
3. Place stone riprap around bridge piers

During repair of the bridge substructure, a temporary signal will be installed on the bridge and alternating one-lane traffic will be allowed to pass on the bridge. The temporary signal will be in place through approximately July 4th.

 After the substructure repair is complete, the expansion joints and stone placement will require full bridge closure via a posted detour (TBD). This work will require approximately 5 weeks to complete. 

100th Street Culvert (Gaines No. 32)

Schedule Date: June 10 - July 5, 2019

Location Detail: .5 Miles west of East Paris Avenue

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Wonsey Tree Service to replace existing 84” cmp culvert with an 8’ x 6’ reinforced concrete box culvert.

11 Mile Road

Schedule Date: May 16 - 31, 2019

Location Detail: Nestor Avenue to Pine Island Drive

Project will consist of cold milling the existing HMA surface and applying a one-course overlay.

13 Mile Road

Schedule Date: June 17 - June 28, 2019

Location Detail: Peach Ridge Ave. to M-37

Crush and shape existing asphalt surface and resurface with 3.5" of HMA (hot mix asphalt).  Through traffic will be detoured. 

13 Mile Road

Schedule Date: April - October 2019

Location Detail: Wabasis Ave. to Wellman, Oakfield MI

Gravel road is being reconstructed to paved road. 

13 Mile Road

Schedule Date: June 5 and June 7, 2019

Location Detail: Fruit Ridge Avenue to Peach Ridge Avenue

The section of 13 Mile Road between Fruit Ridge Avenue and Peach Ridge Avenue will be closed to through traffic for patching on Wednesday, June 5 and top course paving on Friday, June 7. The intersection of Fruit Ridge Avenue and 13 Mile will also be closed on Friday, June 7 for paving. Access to properties within construction limits will remain open.

22 Mile Road (Culvert)

Schedule Date: September 23 - October 4, 2019

Location Detail: Kenowa Avenue and Callen Avenue

The Kent County Road Commission will be replacing a culvert near 4114 22 Mile Road. The road will be closed to all traffic at the culvert with detour posted.

5 Mile Road

Schedule Date: 9-9-19 to 9-27-19

Location Detail: Plainfield Ave. to East Beltline Ave.

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Michigan Paving and Materials to complete a mill and fill reconstruction project. The work includes cold milling the existing three-lane asphalt surface and resurfacing with two courses of HMA (hot mix asphalt). Sidewalk ramps will also be upgraded. Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the project using lane closures.

6 Mile Road

Schedule Date: June 3 - June 28, 2019

Location Detail: Walker Avenue to Alpine Avenue

Resurfacing Project: Crush and shape the existing asphalt surface and resurface with 2 courses of hot mix asphalt (HMA). Through traffic will be detoured to 7 Mile Road.

6 Mile Road

Schedule Date: June 4 - June 28, 2019

Location Detail: Walker Ave. to Alpine Ave.

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Rieth-Riley for a crush and shape resurfacing project on 6 Mile Road. Crush and shape is a structural pavement treatment that grinds, or crushes, the existing asphalt and 1-2” of underlying gravel. The material is then regraded, compacted and covered with multiple layers of paver-placed hot asphalt. Through traffic will be detoured to 7 Mile Road. Access will be provided to residents, businesses and property owners within project limits for the duration of the project.

6 Mile Road

Crush and Shape the existing 3-lane asphalt surface and resurface with 2 courses of HMA (hot asphalt mix).  Through traffic will be detoured.

68th Street at Hanna Lake Avenue

Install new traffic signal with box span configuration, LED signal heads, backplates and detection.

68th Street at Madison Avenue (Proposed)

Modify and upgrade existing traffic signal, with box span configuration, LED signal heads, backplates and updated detection.

7 Mile Road

Schedule Date: August 26 - September 24, 2019

Location Detail: Fruit Ridge Ave. to Alpine Ave.

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Michigan Paving & Materials to reconstruct 7 Mile Road from Fruit Ridge Avenue to Alpine Avenue. The project will include crushing, regrading and compacting the existing asphalt and resurfacing it with new hot mix asphalt.
 
Work will also include aggregate shoulders, guardrail and pavement markings.

76th Street

Schedule Date: August 20 - August 24, 2018

Location Detail: East of Clyde Park Avenue to west side of US-131

The mill and fill project includes cold-milling the existing asphalt 5 inches deep in the 5-lane section of 76th Street and 1.5 inches deep in the 4-lane portion and placing new asphalt paving and pavement markings.  The work will be phased to maintain 2-way traffic on 76th Street at all times.

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Superior Asphalt to complete a resurfacing project on 76th Street. The crew will mill off the existing asphalt and replace it with 3 ½” new hot mix asphalt (HMA).  Through traffic will be detoured.

Project: ​Mill & Fill and Resurfacing

Mill & Fill is a structural pavement treatment that involves the removal of the existing surface layer - and in some cases the entire asphalt pavement thickness - with a milling machine and the replacement of the milled location with new asphalt. This process is used when a surface has deteriorated to poor condition and surrounding grades (i.e. curbs, driveways) must be met.

76th Street (Proposed)

Schedule Date: 2019 Construction Season

Location Detail: Clyde Park Avenue and Gordon Industrial Drive

The proposed project includes the widening of 76th Street to five lanes between Clyde Park Avenue and Gordon Industrial Drive during 2019. Work includes road, bridge and railroad crossing widening, steel piling, precast bridge segments, sand subbase, aggregate base, concrete curb and gutter, asphalt paving, pavement markings and restoration.

A Project Information Open House has been scheduled on December 13, 2018 between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at Byron Township Hall located at 8085 Byron Center Avenue in Byron Center. There is  no planned  presentation;  therefore, those interested may arrive anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

76th Street (Utility Work)

Schedule Date: July 29 - August 14, 2019

Location Detail: Patterson Avenue - Kraft Avenue

West Michigan Dirtworks will be completing sanitary sewer and water main work along with widening 76th Street for a left-turn lane at the new private street, Bramling Drive. During this work, 76th Street between Patterson Avenue and Kraft Avenue will be closed to through traffic with a detour posted. The corridor will remain open to properties and businesses within the project limits.

76th Street / Byron No. 25 Bridge

Schedule Date: August 12 - November 6

Location Detail: Clyde Park Avenue to Gordon Industrial Drive

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Davis Construction to replace Byron No. 25 bridge over Buck Creek, located about 400 feet east of Clyde Park Avenue. The road will alos be widened from 4 lanes to 5 lanes, to create a center turn lane for the entire length of the project. Grand Elk Railroad will also replace the railroad signal.

The road will be open to local traffic throughout the project; however, the bridge and railroad signal work will require complete closure of the roadway at certain periods of the construction process. These tasks will be staggered so that businesses between the bridge and the railroad will always have access from one side or the other.

84th Street (survey work)

Schedule Date: May 2 - 3, 2019

Location Detail: Kalamazoo Avenue to Breton Avenue

The Kent County Road Commission will be completing preliminary survey work for a proposed 2020 reconstruction project on 84th Street between Kalamazoo Avenue and Breton Avenue.

 The section of 84th Street will be closed to through traffic, with a posted detour. Conducting the work within a closure will increase safety for motorists and workers and help to expedite completion.

84th Street at Byron Commerce Drive

Algoma Bridge #52 (10 Mile Road)

Schedule Date: July 15 - October 29, 2019

Location Detail: 10 Mile Road over the Rogue River

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Anlaan Corporation to complete a preventative maintenance project on the Algoma #52 Bridge. Work will include the removal and replacement of brush block (sidewalk), select beam removal and replacement, deck joint replacement, and approach work. The project will be completed using lane closures; two-way traffic will be maintained.

Alta Dale Avenue

Schedule Date: August 7 - August 12, 2017

Location Detail: M-21 to Grand River Drive

Mill & Fill is a structural pavement treatment that involves the removal of the existing surface layer - and in some cases the entire asphalt pavement thickness - with a milling machine and the replacement of the milled location with new asphalt. This process is used when a surface has deteriorated to poor condition and surrounding grades (i.e. curbs, driveways) must be met.

Bailey Drive

Schedule Date: September 23 - October 14, 2019

Location Detail: Boynton Avenue to Parnell Avenue

The Kent County Road Commission will be replacing five cross tiles along the stretch of Bailey Drive and performing a crush & shape of the existing road. Superior Asphalt will then be applying a new asphalt surface.

The road will be closed to through traffic with a detour posted.

Barn Ridge Drive

Belmont Avenue

Location Detail: Belmont Bypass to 10 Mile Road

Belmont Bypass

Schedule Date: Completed May 4, 2018

Location Detail: South of 10 Mile Road

A new road is being constructed from 10 Mile Road and Thrifty Drive, south and west, to Belmont Avenue. Belmont Avenue is being widened from Graphic Drive south approximately 500 feet.Construction of new all season road will divert 10 Mile & Belmont Avenue left turns to the signalized intersection at the Meijer Entrance on 10 Mile Road. This project will provide for a three-lane roadway, with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane.

Bostwick Lake View Drive, Summerwind Avenue and Summer Lane Avenue

Schedule Date: June 6-June 11 2018

Location Detail: Bostwick Lake View Dr (9 Mile Road to End); Summerlane Avenue (5 Mile to Summerwind); Summerwind Avenue (5 Mile to end)

Project will include an Ultra Thin Overlay with a chipseal interlayer.

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Rieth Riley Construction to complete a mill and fill resurfacing. The project consists of cold milling the existing hot mix asphalt surface and replacing it with one course overlay.

The road will be closed to through traffic; motorists should seek alternate route.

Brower Lake Dr, Brower Ave and Oakview Ave

Byron Bridge #25

Location Detail: 76th Street over Buck Creek

Superstructure replacement and widening to 5 lanes.  This is in conjunction with the 76th street widening project.  

Byron Center Avenue

Schedule Date: July 15-September 10, 2019

Location Detail: 92nd Street to 84th Street

Work is scheduled to resume Tuesday, August 13 on this full-depth mill and fill reconstruction project. Work will include removal and replacement of existing asphalt surface on the west side of Byron Center Avenue. On Tuesday, August 13, there will be a one-day closure of northbound traffic; a detour will be posted. Southbound Byron Center Avenue traffic will be maintained. Two-way traffic will resume at 7 p.m. that evening, Tuesday, August 13. Work will continue under lane closures to maintain one lane of traffic in each direction.

Byron No. 57 Culvert (on 100th St)

Schedule Date: September 27, 2019 - November 6, 2019

Location Detail: 100th Street - 1/2 Mile West of Clyde Park Avenue. Over Buck Creek (200 yards east of Grand Elk RR Crossing)

Replacement of the Byron No. 57 culvert over Buck Creek. 

Caledonia Bridge #9 (Proposed)

Location Detail: 68th Street over the Thornapple River

Preventative maintenance project including concrete deck repair and overlay, deck joint replacement and concrete approaches.

Caledonia Trail Phase 1B

Schedule Date: 2019 - TBD

Construction of a 10-foot wide asphalt non-motorized trail extending from the Paul Henry Thornapple Trail within Caledonia Lakeside Park northeast to 92nd Street and Cherry Valley Avenue and north to 84th Street.  Local match provided by Caledonia Township. 

Campau Lake Streets (Caledonia) (COMPLETE)

Cannon Meadows Drive

Full-depth mill and fill. This includes cold milling (removing) the existing 5-lane asphalt surface and resurfacing with 7.5 inches of HMA (hot mix asphalt).  Two-way traffic will be maintained. 

Cascade Road at 36th Street

Install new traffic signal with box span configuration, LED signal heads, backplates and detection.

Cascade Springs Subdivision (COMPLETE)

Clifford Avenue

Schedule Date: May 1 - May 10, 2018

Location Detail: Between Ada Drive and Cascade Road

Clyde Park Avenue (Utility)

Schedule Date: May 29 – July 14, 2018

Location Detail: Alles Drive to 750 feet south

The utility project consists of sanitary sewer and water main extensions, private street entrance, road widening and resurfacing.

Crahen Avenue and Leonard Street

Schedule Date: May 13 - July 3, 2019

Realign Crahen Avenue northwesterly into Leonard Street.  Leonard Street east becomes stop street.  Work includes earthwork, drainage, HMA pavement, pavement markings and restoration.  Work will be completed using shoulder closures (beginning May 20) and a short duration closure. Beginning Saturday, June 22, the current intersection will be closed as the connections from Crahen Avenue and Leonard Street to the new connector roadway are constructed. This section will be closed to through traffic with a detour posted. Access to residences within the project limits will be maintained for the closure. These residents should expect to travel along a short stretch of gravel road where the connection is being made.  The realigned section is scheduled to be open to traffic by July 12.

Schedule Date: 2019

Improvements to existing abandoned rail grades between City of Lowell and City of Greenville and the City of Lowell and City of Saranac to provide a 10-foot wide unpaved non-motorized trail.  Work includes bridge and culvert work, crushed asphalt and grading.  Local match provided by City of Geenville and the County of Ionia. 

Fred Meijer Pioneer Trail Phase 2

Freeport Avenue

Project: Spot Mill & Fill and Chip Seal

A Mill & Fill is a structural pavement treatment that involves the removal of the existing surface layer - and in some cases the entire asphalt pavement thickness - with a milling machine and the replacement of the milled location with new asphalt. This process is used when a surface has deteriorated to poor condition and surrounding grades (i.e. curbs, driveways) must be met. During a spot mill & Fill, the deteriorated sections of the stretch of road are milled, removed and replaced with new asphalt. The entire raod- edge to edge, with then receive a chip seal application.

 

Chip Seal is a pavement surface treatment that combines a layer of asphalt with a layer of fine aggregate to provide a high friction-wearing surface over old pavement.

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Rieth-Riley Construction to resurface Freeport Avenue with one course of 1.5-inch Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) overlay. Two-way traffic will be maintained; motorists should anticipate delays.

About: Mill & Fill is a structural pavement treatment that involves the removal of the existing surface layer with a milling machine and the replacement of the milled location with new asphalt. This process is used when a surface has deteriorated to poor condition and surrounding grades (i.e. curbs, driveways) must be met. For this project, 2 inches of existing asphalt will be removed and replaced with 2 inches of hot mix asphalt (HMA).

The Kent County Road Commission has contracted Rieth Riley Construction to complete a mill and fill resurfacing. The project consists of cold milling the existing hot mix asphalt surface and replacing it with one course overlay.

Knapp Street

Location Detail: East of City Limits to East Beltline Ave.

Cold mill and crush and shape existing 2-lane to 6-lane asphalt surface and resurface with 2 courses of HMA (hot mix asphalt).  Through traffic will be detoured west of Leffingwell Avenue and maintained east.

Knapp Street (COMPLETE)

Schedule Date: July 23, 2018 to (August 31 – East Segment); November 16, 2018 (Project Completion)

Location Detail: Dunnigan Avenue to Pettis Avenue

Reconstruction work takes place on Knapp Street between the Grand River Bridge and Pettis Avenue (East Segment) and Dunnigan Avenue to 900 feet west of Grand River Drive (West Segment). Work includes widening and resurfacing to provide a three-lane roadway with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane. Initially, the contractor will place temporary paving on the north side of Knapp Street in order to maintain two-way traffic. After placing the temporary paving throughout the project, construction work will begin on the East Segment. This portion will be completed by August 31, 2018. Overall completion is scheduled for October 31, 2018.

Knapp Street (Pavement Preservation)

KCRC is applying an ultra thin overlay on Knapp Street as a pavement preservation treatment. KCRC has begun applying these types of cost-effective surface treatments one to three years after a road receives a major improvement to protect the investment. (In 2018, a reconstruction project was completed on this section of Knapp Street.) Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the project; drivers should anticipate delays.

The project will consist of replacing the concrete bridge approach south of the highway overpass and cold milling and paving Kraft Avenue from north of 36th Street to Coach Drive. The project will be phased to maintain one lane of traffic in each direction at all times during construction.

Lamoreaux Drive

Location Detail: Alpine Ave. to West River Dr.

Improvement work on Lamoreaux Drive between Alpine Avenue and West River Drive has been completed two months ahead of schedule. An additional closure is needed to allow Marquette Rail to replace the railroad crossing located on Lamoreaux Drive south of Clark Street. (Because the road and utility improvements were completed well ahead of schedule, an additional closure for the railroad work will be used.) Message boards will be installed ahead of the closure and a detour will be posted.
